Iceland: Land of fire and ice. Land of lore. Land of the happiest, most friendly accommodating people one can imagine.

This was my 3rd trip to Iceland. I was once again brought in by my dear friend (and second mom) Asta and her family as she hosted me for Yoga Academy International‘s Chakra Vinyasa yoga teacher training at her studio in Hafnarfjörður.

I traveled to Iceland with my friend (love) Boe. We are still working out the details of “us” which is why I have not mentioned him much on social media. Sometimes geography and situational circumstances make life a little more complicated than a person is ready to take on… If you want to know all about our relationship you can read about it in this article on elephant journal.

I had always dreamed of seeing Iceland by  campervan. When we got to Iceland though,  the only thing Boe wanted to do, the single item on his Iceland bucket list, was to visit the Icelandic Phallalogical Museum.

The penis museum.

The museum of natural dicks.

As it turns out, Iceland has the largest collection of Penis’ on display anywhere in the world. Boe couldn’t resist the opportunity to pay his respects to the giant phallus of a sperm whale.

The chakra vinyasa yoga teacher training I taught took place over 2 consecutive from Friday – Monday. This meant that we had 4 days to explore Iceland in between. An opportunity I could not pass up.

It has long been a dream of mine to sleep on the road. I love going with no plan, having everything I need with me but nothing more. I’ve done plenty of traveling, camping, touring but I had never before gone on a roadtrip in a vehicle we could actually sleep in. Iceland in a campervan was something I had always always ALWAYS wanted to do.

Iceland is incredibly safe, beautiful, sparsely populated and truly the perfect spot for this kind of adventure.  I had romantic dreams of pulling a car up in front of a vista and tucking myself in over cliff faces and ocean views. Thanks to Affordable Campers, that is exactly what happened.

Afforable Campers is a brand new camper van company owned by friends Birgir and Robert. These guys are kind, honest, generous and extremely hard working. They’ve personally renovated every single van and started their grassroots company working evenings and weekends around their full time jobs (much to the chagrin of Robert’s wife).

With smiles on their faces and so much trust they handed us the keys to a brand new Volkswagon Caddy. The van they gave us was spotless and kitted out with everything we could need for our journey: Pots, pans, fridge, table, chairs, inverter plug for our electronics, new bed linens, puffy duvets, a heater and a curtain to block out the midnight sun. Hearing their story was inspiring and their faith in us was equally sweet. We set off for the unknown.

A massive storm was due to his the west coast of the Island. So Boe and I meandered our way North East. We had no solid plan really other than to chase better weather.

One of the students in the yoga training happened to live in Akureyri. She invited us to visit her family’s sheep farm in the rural area nearby. With true Icelandic hospitality, she toured us around, showed us cute little lambs, the mountains and streams and then invited us to her house for dinner (of roast lamb, which by the way was delicious). Eating from the land and eating from our friend’s local farm was a true highlight. We felt like we were getting a really authentic Icelandic experience.

Other memorable moments included the natural baths at Myvatin (far better views than the more famous Blue Lagoon), the Western peninsula, fjords, snow capped mountains, discovering waterfalls at 2am with no one around, camping on the side of windy cliffs and just driving around with ours jaws dropped as we felt like we were on a different planet.

In total we traveled almost 2000kms in just 4 days. With the sun never fully setting we drove through the nights most nights. Yes our biological clocks got totally screwed up but it was worth it.

Check out this video tour of our Affordable Campers Van!

After firsthand experience I can genuinely say that Iceland by camper van is THE way to see the country.

Freedom, safety, warmth and open road are all any traveler could ever ask for.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit and renting another Affordable Camper van to see more of this charming, breathtaking, magical land.
